The section of Beach Road north of Kakanui that has been reduced to a single lane for the last three years is about to be reinstated around the slip face as a two-lane road. The section was badly damaged following a landslip which was severe enough to reduce the road to a single lane for safety reasons. Roading Manager Michael Voss says contractor The Roading Company has been awarded the contract and will start work in early April. “The re-opening of two lanes will come as a welcome to many people who use this road travelling between Kakanui and Oamaru,” says Mr Voss.
It is hoped that the work will be completed in May, subject to weather. Temporary speed restrictions will be in place and there may be occasional road closures when required.
A detour will only be put in place around Beach Road (Gees Road – Seadown Road – Fortification Road) when the section of road needs to be closed. This will be assessed on a day-to-day basis, depending on the stage of work. Some work has already been done relaying the water and sewage pipes that were also damaged by the landslip. This work is almost complete and will be finished before the road reinstatement work starts.
