Maheno Bridge to have major refit
The Maheno Bridge on Kakanui Valley Road, is to receive a major refit, with work starting after Easter on 19 April.
The work will complete the replacement programme that was started last year. Bridge components, known as transoms, will be replaced as these support the concrete deck and will be fitted by a specialised bridge team.
Network Operations Engineer Mark Renalson says the bridge will be closed during the daytime (8am to 6pm daily except for weekends) for approximately six weeks.
“It is expected that the work will be completed by the end of May with an alternative route in place and signposted.”
The alternative route will be Kakanui Valley Road / Willowview Road / Island Stream Road / Wairoa Road / Waimotu Road / State Highway 1.
It is believed that this bridge was once part of a bridge that crossed the Kakanui River on State Highway 1. Following its replacement, the original bridge is thought to have been divided into two sections – one for Maheno which we’re now refitting and the other section crossing Kauru River on Kauru Hill Road.
“This is a good example of how the life of a state highway bridge can be extended and transferred to other parts of the district where bridges are still necessary but have less demand on them.”
