People of all ages who are capable of walking for a minimum of one hour on uneven surfaces are invited to walk through rare mature native forest, guided by members of the North Otago Tramping and Mountaineering Club. This Sunday, 9th April, walks will depart from Herbert Forest where Breakneck Road turns off State Highway 1 just south of the Herbert rail overbridge (then follow the signs). A toilet will be available and a minibus will provide transport between the base and track ends. First walks will depart at 10am, the last at 12 noon. Participants should bring: stout footwear with grippy soles (tracks are slippery in places and most walks involve several shallow stream crossings);
clothing suitable for wet and cold weather; water, lunch or snacks and a camera. Please leave the dog at home and do not smoke.
Five trips will be available: Podocarp Loop – 1 hour, Swallows Track circuit – 1- 1 ½ hours, Hoods Creek Track (one way) – 1 ½ hours, Podocarp Circuit (including Glenburnie and Podocarp Loops) 1-2 hours, Full Monty – Swallows, Podocarp and Hoods Creek Tracks (one way) – 3-4 hours. In addition there will be a special botanical walk of 1-2 hours with an expert on local native plants.
